So I have a company that manages vacation rentals. What would happen if the government suddenly gave everyone $3000 a year to go on vacation? Well as you could imagine I would be very happy about that. The demand for our rental properties would go crazy as hundreds of millions of people would be looking for vacation rentals to rent with the money the government gave them.
What would happen to the prices we charge? .... they would go up. They would go way up. This is not because I am evil or greedy, it's simply because of supply and demand. We have so much demand for our rentals and only so many rentals we can put people in. Also with all this additional revenue we would be able to make our rentals very nice and include the very best in amenities and maid staff. Also you could imagine if the government did this I would be very much in favor of the government as it would be the goose laying my golden egg and I likely would promote certain ideas about government to my staff and all those associated with our company.
So why is college expensive? Because the government through pell grants and easy to get student loans is flooding the education market with cash. It's economics 101. You increase the demand for a product by subsidizing it keep the supply remains essentially the same and what you get is higher prices. It's not complicated. What also happens is you get an entire system of people (academia) that systemically is incentivized to see government as the solution because it is the government that upholds the entire system and economy they are part of. Follow the money. This perhaps explains why 9 out of ten academics are left wing. Which in turn causes major problems in the peer review process. Do we really think we can trust a peer review by people who are 90-95% ideologically similar? If Fox News produced a study that was peer reviewed by Brietbart, The Daily Wire, and The Blaze would we really think that was a legitimate peer review process? Now obviously in hard scientific fields like physics a persons worldview has less ability to effect the results of a study. But how about gender studies? or sociology? or political science?
Academia is still very much a place of brilliant minds and quality research, but it also is a place filled with absolute garbage. Blindly following academics demonstrates a persons ignorance of historical academic malfeasance. Like most things in life it's not black and white. So be a critical thinker and don't blind yourself to the fact that government has perverted the system of free thought and science that should reign in our institutions of higher learning. Government is not the solution the problems in academia, it's the main cause of them.
